Also, anyone who's like "Oh my god this is queerbaiting and nothing queer is actually happening here" needs to get their eyes and ears checked because the Utena energy and references are OVERT. Like I watched Utena once like... ten years ago and i INSTANTLY clocked the story beats.

There are so many cool characters I'm intrigued by!!! And the mobile suit designs are excellent!! Gosh!!

This is going to be a life-changing Gundam series for sure. It already is but I'm very excited to keep watching.

Everything I write - even the stuff I get paid for - is extremely self indulgent. This latest J unpei Yoshino (my sad blorbo from Jujutsu Kaisen who shows up in like three episodes I think, maybe four) story is no exception to that. It's a relatively lighthearted amateur porn AU where Junpei (the amateur in question) links up with Mahito, a Twitter/OnlyFans guy who's known as the "patchwork porn star" because of his tattoos", for his first video that's not a solo shot on his smartphone. This is from the 2/3rds point right after Mahito has just finished telling Junpei that he wished he'd seen his videos earlier because he would've booked all of Junpei's time and shot with him this entire time.

And queer/feminist fandoms insistence that anyone asking for anything in fandom criticizing fandom behaviors up to and including overt racism are "trying to take our porn"

It's not subtle and it is incredibly concerning...

Because we're watching people parrot white supremacist stances to scare people into defending racism in fandom as a thing that NEEDS to exist (or else nothing else can like AO3 finally hiring that diversity consultant will mean that all the underage gap Omegaverse gets burnt). We're watching people say that freedom to create RACIST content on purpose is more valuable than fans of color feeling like fandom is a safe space for us all too.

Scaremongering in an attempt to get people to harass and undermine fans of color talking about racism is already gross. It becomes worse when the language use directly copies that of white supremacists' incitements to violence over their right to own or have a thing at the direct response to human beings.

And let's not pretend that this can't possibly have real world impacts including physical violence. In my case, Amber Goldsmith has made no attempt to hide that they actively want law enforcement to hurt me and arrest me to the point where she has lied repeatedly about our interactions to fandom and to law enforcement. We're talking multiple police reports according to her. And had they listened to her? That'd be a swatting. A thing that has resulted in deaths before. And this would be over fucking reylo? Okay.

Anyway...

When you tell fandom "they're [antis, unspecified, but mostly just fans of color] only talking about racism in fandom and in the ao3 so that they can take you're porn" you're doing this for the same reason the conservative creeps insist their guns are at risk of being taken away. You want someone else to do the hard work of hurting the people you've decided to position as a direct threat to your interest even though they're not talking to or about you... And taking anything from you isn't even on the menu.

My God. Grow up, get some sense. Get some clarity about how you're behaving in fandom.

One thing I’ve resolved to do a lot more of in 2023?

Write super indulgent erotic fan fiction! I really largely stopped writing fic once I got into grad school ages ago, but getting into Jujutsu Kaisen actually jumpstarted my writing mind and I’m writing stuff that moves me.

So below the cut (various cuts? I’m trying to do 3 lol) are some of the things I’m working on! 1 Meryl/Wolfwood(/Vash) from Trigun Stampede and 2 Jujutsu Kaisen stories: a tentacle monster Mahito/Junpei one and a Yuji/Junpei one that also has Sukuna/Yuji and Mahito/Junpei! All some level of NSFW in overall tone if not the snippet you get!

Why is fandom (broadly) bad at understanding media?

I saw two different (but connected) tweets about Jujutsu Kaisen that said that hot white haired teacher Gojo Satoru was a "bad person" who was just using the teenaged main characters for his own goals and didn't really care about them.

And yes, it's normal for people to be wrong on the internet, but not at this volume? It's super clear that Gojo, while impish and cavalier, is the SAME kind of character archetype as Kakashi from Naruto right down to how what we understand his goals to be and what they actually are are two different things.

And it just reminded me of how... basically no one can dislike anything just because they dislike it. It's not enough to say "Gojo is annoying, i don't care about him". it has to BECOME "this man is a danger to children". Even though saying that ignores everything Gojo went through as a child and what he's actually working towards as an adult.

A piece of media can hand hold your way through the clearest possible route to an answer and fandom will still get the worst and most incorrect meaning possible from it.

Embarrassing.

So... about Toji Fushiguro

Back in the day I was a big time anime husband simp. Huge. Massive. Had white haired anime men all over my folders and binders in middle school and had the black market smutty fan fiction ring to go along with it. And you know, I thought I had left that behind me... until I saw Jujutsu Kaisen and started reading the series.

Anyway, I watched Jump Festa's Jujutsu Kaisen panel on Friday night (ugly laughing because they clearly had to rearrange the panel because the actor who played Suguru Geto can't be expected to be onstage because he had a massive cheating scandal recently) and they dropped the first look at the series' second season which will cover the past of the adult characterrs in the show and the (apparently) devastating arc in Shibuya right after that.

And like... the thing is...

We finally know what Toji Fushiguro, daddy to one of the main characters (Megumi, my son), is gonna look like once animated and on our screens this coming July.

Do you ever think about hypocrisy?

Let's use the fandom for Interview with the Vampire as an example.

Inane, really bland, and incredibly hypercritical analysis of the newly racebent characters in the show (Louis, Claudia, and Armand) is seen as valid and necessary to the point where if you refuse to do it or call it out, people in the fandom will mock and harass you.

But then if you are (hyper) critical of Lestat in the show or Louis in the book and film for the antiblack racism their respective characters display because of how Rice conceived them... You don't understand trauma, you can't read the Text, you don't know what you're talking about?

Across so many of these fandoms I watch people lay into black and brown characters like it's their job to tear them down. There's always some reason why a Black or brown character is wrong or shouldn't be trusted or is a danger to the main white character fandom likes. Fandom actively refuses to protect or defend these characters from overharsh criticism and pointing out how unfair it is gets us labeled and harassed...

But naming a white guy as... Well anything, not even a villain or a nazi or a racist beyond that... but simply calling them WHITE is always met with a disproportionate amount of aggression.

Disgusting.

I read almost 20 chapters of this novel in one sitting today... Mo Ran is the most valid and invalid person in the world. If I had a shizun like Chu Wanning, I would act the entire hell up too... But maybe, not to his extremes.

Anyway, I love this book. I love Mo Ran. I love Chu Wanning. I'm literally throwing the book away from me so I don't finish it while I have so much work to do. Meatbun is a legend and I hope her bills remain paid, her skin stays clear, and her hair is effortlessly easy to manage.

Soft Hours Are Just Starting - Tulip/Angel

Note: I finished the second story in this series - the novellas I want to write are uh... pending - so now I feel confident in posting this here now... several months after it was completed in like June. Next up... next week or so... more of these lesbians!

All pop star Tulip wants is to get her back blown out responsibly in order to relieve some of the stress from working on her third album. Thankfully, Angel, one of the new producers working on the album and the genius behind the beats for the song that’ll be her newest single, seems like she’s up for the challenge. And the talented producer’s studio is soundproofed.

It’s easy to get Angel right where Tulip wants her.

Mostly because the meeting that Tulip and her team are having about the latest tweaks that Angel has made to the beat for "Better Than You Bet", Tulip's upcoming single on her latest album is taking place in the other woman's studio.

So Tulip sits on the arm of the grey couch that takes up the far wall directly across from Angel's equipment and the wide pane of glass that overlooks the recording booth through the entire meeting going back and forth with Angel and the other members of her team until they're all satisfied. The entire time, she's staring at Angel like she's trying to memorize the other woman's features, one hand sweeping over her own leg where the hem of her sundress rides up from how she's sitting.

Some Thoughts on Appropriation and What Idols Owe Fans & Vice Versa

Earlier this month, when EXO’s Chen revealed that he had a baby on the way and was newly engaged to his girlfriend of several years, some EXO-Ls across the fandom kind of lost their shit. (Like protesting and petitioning for SM Entertainment to cut him from the group.)

One of the things I found really interesting about the whole thing - aside from the small subset of fans’ insistence that they were in some way let down by Chen’s surprise as if they had a shot at being his Ms. Kim somehow - was this repeated commentary that by buying EXO CDs and merch or Chen’s solo material, that the fans somehow owned him.

Believe me when I say that despite the truly large amount of money that I’ve spent on BTS and Monsta X in 2019/2020 so far, I don’t think I own any member of the group. I don’t think any single one of them owes me anything -

Aside from the actual things idols do “owe” their fans in the context of the weird parasocial relationship they cultivate with us. (Things like being “good” people and role models to an extent, not being bigots, appearing loving to the fanbase, not insulting fans, etc.)

But thinking of that reminded me of something else:

I don’t own the groups I stan, but they don’t own me either.

Some Notes, Folks

We're just over two weeks into 2020 and almost all of my content so far has been about how deeply antiblack the Star Wars fandom - especially Rey/Kylo shippers - have been about John Boyega for that entire time. This shit is tiring. Too many white women in fandom are really showing that they're not really allies when it comes to antiblackness. Like people who aren't even in this fandom are out here like "oh man, looks like antis are mad about something, I'd better get on the train and make them even more upset" - 

Except that it's not an "anti Reylo vs Reylo" thing? It's that for a significant chunk of 2020, those shippers have used the excuse of "John is disrespecting women with his "who lays the pipe" comment on Instagram in order to get away with unending antiblackness. 

I talk about some of the things I've seen in my podcast episode over here, but what's been stunning is seeing (largely not exclusively white) women in this fandom use their womanhood as a stick to beat John with and to represent what's been happening as them being under endless attack from John and by "his fans" (who they actually seem to think are members of The Fandom Menace apparently) because they're women. 

(Ignoring of course, that some of the loudest voices calling out their continuous bad behavior aren't just women but Black women.)

What I'm seeing (and documenting) across this fandom is horrifying. It is White Feminism taken to an extreme that leaves me genuinely worried for John's future in fandom. People are planning to try and boycott his future projects. They're willfully spreading misinformation about his comment(s). They're calling him an abuse apologist (for following Chris Brown on Instagram). They tweet about how John has made fandom dangerous for women and girls because he... didn't allow some fans to keep coming for him over literally nothing.   They're even - and this is extremely worrying to me - trying to spread rumors about John's romantic past that claim he's an abuser.

When coupled with the fact that many people keep tying this in to a fear for Daisy Ridley and saying that John certainly must have made her uncomfortable (because of a crush he supposedly has on her or that he hit on her and she turned him down) -

There is a reliance on framing this as (white) women needing to protect Daisy/Rey from John.

It's the "Black Brute" trope all over again only this time it's playing out with John Boyega, not a character. 

I'm tired.

I mean, genuinely tired.

None of the outlets that cover fandom - even toxic fandom - are actually digging into what we're seeing. The shippers are convinced that they're right and have essentially brainwashed themselves into thinking that this isn't about their villain hero/ship. Random ass strangers with no understanding of the fact that these are people using Gamer/Comics-gate tactics - shifted of course to make women the poor victims opposite John - to try and thoroughly derail John's career.

This is poisonous and I don't know how long it'll take before they move on to something else and leave John alone. 

Also, some more notes/updates, I guess... 

What's been wild is seeing anti anti/anti fandom police accounts join up with the Rey/Kylo fans? If they're against policing fandom for edgy or inappropriate content, shouldn't they be on John's side for clapping back against people trying to tell him what he can/n't joke about or what kind of fan content he can create? But whiteness (and white womanhood reigns supreme in these fandom spaces and so once again, Black people defending themselves and what they love from racist fandoms are reduced to "bullies", "antis", and people who shouldn't be trusted to have opinions in fandom.
Speaking of Black people in fandom: I am so so tired of other Black people in fandom who rush to throw themselves in the line of fire. The Black Reylos who need you to know that they don't think the fandom's behavior is wrong. The Black k-pop fans that are serious when they say they'd let their idol fave call them a racial slur and show up to be like "that's not appropriation, it's appreciation" when grown folks are talking.
If I, a Black person with close to a decade of actively talking and writing critically about antiblackness in fandom and media, am too biased to be taken seriously cannot speak for all Black fans... neither can you biased little potato chip that thinks your seal of approval makes everything okay and silences discourse. (PickMe are so damn annoying, y'all. And they do all of this for people that genuinely don't even like them?? It's wild.)
There's a new attempt at a post-tumblr fandom platform called Fanexus. It's in the planning stages now, but I don't really see the chances of it getting off the ground. For one thing, it's focused on returning to the Good Ole Days of fandom where critique wasn't widely shared and people didn't shout down their squicks. For another, at least one of the founders has me blocked on their main twitter and they run an anti-anti twitter that mocks, derails, and dismisses content critical of fandom. But it's interesting to think about how their rules (like about not being mean to fans as a group, only keeping criticism to the fandom thing) will be used to silence POC if they get off the ground.
Fanexus also seems like it wants to reinvent a creaky wheel by organizing and archiving fanworks, but like... the AO3 exists. As imperfect as it is and with how much I can't stand that it's responsible for some racist nonsense still accessible on the internet and in transformative fandom in 2020... I can't actually imagine that this Fanexus ish will do much better.
I'm looking for more paid writing work because I have big bills AND am going to be working on treating myself in a time when everything is so stressful. My one wish is that I can get REALLY GOOD Monsta X tickets this Friday, but I have no idea how that's going to happen or how much it'll cost... (Hire me for something?? PLEASE! I will write almost anything!!)

[Process] San E's Wannabe Rapper and Feminism (Ish)

I find San E one of the most fascinating rappers in Korean hip hop because he's a guy that'll clap back against his peers' lacking skills and their limited POV (with a verse (?) like this - "I’m feminist (u know) I love them bitches..." serving up a direct jab at the hypocrisy many of these rappers have where women are concerned) -

But then...

He was one of the main judges for Unpretty Rapstar and not only did he basically lean in hard to the informal speech over these younger women in the crew, he constantly talked about their beauty and set himself up as the arbiter of what "real" hip hop was/looked like by saying things like:

“These are the female rappers that lead the Korean hip hop scene. Unpretty Rapstar. We wish you do not dishonor this name and work hard to become beautiful rappers. We look forward to hearing real hip hop from you.”

(This quote is from the season finale of Unpretty Rapstar referenced in Hanguk Hip Hop.)

Instead of appearing to take them seriously as performers on par with the dudes. (Like he'd never tell one of the rappers on Show Me The Money how good looking they were as if it stopped them from being able to be taken seriously...)

Like he doesn't seem super self-aware to me?

Note: he also grew up in Georgia in a predominantly Black neighborhood and that's like... really interesting for me because San E, when I started this project, was someone introduced to/referenced to me as someone who'd been antiblack. So... I need to learn more about his past to understand him.

Note 2: Wannabe Rapper was inspired by Childish Gambino's "This Is America" and let me tell you how uncomfortable it is to see the end result be kind of... comparatively shallow. Like a song about antiblackness and gun violence in the US then inspired... a diss track about how shallow rappers in South Korea are... hm... I don't like it.
